We found this when we were going through my grandma’s photos (after she passed away on April 29, 2012 at the age of 98). It’s taken in Los Angeles. I forgot about this photo but it’s one of my favorites. It was taken in the 1930s and the dress was likely made by my grandma, like a lot of her clothes.

but with regard to manifest destiny, the reference to 1856 was a post-gold-rush-pre-civil-war-and-homestead act date i picked to illustrate the movement of people out west and the rise of “cowboy” culture. i made no reference to the monroe doctrine. also manifest destiny was used to justify the subjugation and forcible removal of people in texas and mexican territory during the war with mexico. it became associated with the removal of all indigenous peoples. it was a dark time in american history for sure. but it was also a time of great growth for the people who fought the assumptions that whites were mandated by God to control the continent. some of the most ardent supporters of indian rights and later abolitionists were born out of this misguided movement.
but all in all…it was a joke. some might think it was in poor taste, but if you know me, you took it with a grain of salt and the sarcasm and irony with which i make all historical references. since history is kind of my business.”

- Laughing While I Sing.: the satirical carey price post is still causing confusion, which i suppose i understand. but i’m also going to repost this question i got regarding one of the reactions to the post, because the general assumption is i am ignorant of history and just being racist. when actually the joke was carefully crafted by my history background and combined with what i thought was dripping sarcasm to illustrate a point about “fantasy” in the fandom.

Today my mom wasn’t home, so my eight year old sister asked me to set some words for her so she could write her daily sentences. I knew she did them every day, but I’ve never bothered to read them before.

My sister is a lot of things. She’s extremely smart, fairly quiet, and absolutely hilarious. But today I learned two new things about her:

a) my sister does not have a way with the written word

b) my sister is addicted to crack cocaine

I don’t know what the fuck she’s smoking but I want in on it sweet baby jesus I did not know what to do with myself while I was reading some of these

what is wrong with her

I don’t even understand what some of these mean

(things you should know: I am natalie, and her “silkys” are two little silk & velveteen blankets she’s slept with since she was born.)
